Important: This article is a high-level summary of Yoco's Terms and Conditions. It is not a legal document and is not a substitute for the full agreement. Please read our complete Terms and Conditions carefully before accepting them.
If you’re unsure, or have questions, we’re always here to help. Email us at [email protected] or reach out to Yoco Support via our in-app chat.
When you can start getting paid
You can only start taking payments and getting paid out once you've signed up with Yoco and successfully completed your Yoco profile.
💡 Good to know: Yoco accepts payments from anywhere in the world, but all balances, fees, charges, and payments collected or paid through Yoco, are in South African Rand.
What Yoco can't be used for
There are a few things you can't sell or do with Yoco. The Prohibited Businesses list is short, but it's important.
You can't use Yoco to:
Sell electricity or airtime, or make cash withdrawals.
Run a loan business or take offline transactions or debit orders.
Pass card transaction fees on to your customers (this is illegal in South Africa)
Operate a time-share or holiday club
Run a criminal enterprise or pyramid scheme
Operate bureaux de change, high-risk security investments, commodity investments, or other investment enterprises
Sell prescription or illegal drugs, or tobacco products (including cannabis, THC, and CBD products)
Run adult content or escort agencies
Operate as an independent financial adviser
Please note: The above list is a summary of our Prohibited Businesses. Please read the full list here (scroll down and select Prohibited Businesses).
What you're agreeing to
When you sign up with Yoco, you accept our Merchant Agreement. It's the foundation of our relationship – what you can expect from us, and what we expect from you.
You take on responsibilities like complying with certain rules and paying your fees. In return, you get access to Yoco's services and support. If you use a Yoco card machine, you'll also accept the relevant card machine policies.
On our side, we commit to providing our services properly and lawfully, supporting your business, protecting your information, and keeping the entire payment ecosystem safe – backed by internationally accredited practices and a proactive in-house fraud team that takes this seriously.
Your responsibilities
When you sign up, you need to provide accurate details about yourself and your business, including any verification documents we ask for to complete your Yoco profile.
You also need to let our Support Team know immediately if:
Anything changes about your business, its ownership, or your bank account
You think someone has accessed your Yoco profile without authorisation
You want to cancel your agreement or stop using Yoco's services
Beyond that, here's what we ask of you:
Run a lawful business – your transactions, employees, and operations must comply with all applicable laws.
Honour your obligations to your customers and resolve any disputes directly with them.
Never commit fraud or interfere with Yoco's services.
Only process genuine sales of goods or services.
Don't allow business owners to process payments to the business in their personal capacity.
Cooperate fully if Yoco investigates any of your transactions.
You also give Yoco the authority to hold, receive, and pay out settlement funds on your behalf, and to deduct any amounts you owe Yoco from your payouts.
Using any payment service comes with risk, and by using Yoco, you accept that it is at your own risk. Find out how to protect yourself here.
Transferring your Yoco profile
Your Yoco profile and the rights and obligations that come with it are yours – they can't be transferred or delegated to someone else.
Service availability and downtime
Yoco's services rely on a combination of external networks, banks, and mobile systems. We do everything we reasonably can to keep things running reliably, but we can't guarantee there will never be interruptions or downtime. Our services are provided on an "as is" and "as available" basis.
Card machine policies
Our card machine policies cover refunds and exchanges, warranty details, delivery rejections, and damages. There are also specific terms around the free SIM that comes with unlimited data for transacting on Yoco (certain card machines only).
You'll find the full policy here (scroll down to Yoco Device & SIM Card Policy)
When Yoco updates its terms
Yoco may update the terms of its Agreement from time to time – as regulations and risk shift, we make sure our legal framework keeps up to protect our ecosystem. We also reserve the right to change our fees or introduce new ones.
If any changes don't work for you, you can cancel at any time and immediately, with no penalties or notice periods.
Payouts and chargebacks
Your payout is the settlement amount we pay into your bank account – all valid transactions, minus Yoco's fees as set out in your pricing plan and fee schedule. You'll get a monthly invoice for all your payouts, and you can view or download them anytime in the Yoco App.
A chargeback is a transaction that has been lawfully disputed, reversed, or that we consider suspicious or unlawful. If this happens, we'll withhold the full chargeback amount, plus any associated costs, from your settlement funds (payout) until the dispute is resolved or the window for the dispute has closed.
Protecting against fraud and criminal activity
Yoco takes financial crime seriously. To protect our merchants and the broader payment ecosystem, we may:
Refuse to do business with anyone we suspect is involved in illegal activity or other activities that may impact us negatively.
Verify the identity of anyone trying to access your Yoco profile.
Block access to and/or suspend your account if we suspect it's being used for unlawful purposes, or you're being targeted by cybercriminals.
Ask for more information and/or hold a transaction for further checks before processing it, even if this causes a delay.
If we reasonably suspect fraudulent or criminal activity, we may also:
Conduct physical investigations at your place of business, or any other relevant place.
Suspend or terminate your access to our services immediately and without notice
Delay or withhold payment.
Share your details with the relevant authorities (such as SAPS, SAFPS, or the acquiring bank)
Any action taken through your account is legally considered to have been authorised by you. Please stay alert to phishing scams and other fraud – find out more here.
Closing your Yoco account
You're never locked in with Yoco. You can cancel our agreement at any time by contacting our Support Team via in-app chat – no fees, no penalties, no notice period.
If you've signed up but never transacted, we'll delete your profile (and the information associated with it) so you can use the same email address and number if you sign up with us again in future.
If you've already transacted, we'll settle any outstanding amounts into your linked bank account. We won't be able to delete your profile as FICA regulations require us to keep it on record for at least five years, but it will remain inactive and we can turn off all Yoco communications. If you're no longer using your card machine, you'll need to remove it from your profile before selling or gifting it. Learn about transferring ownership of your Yoco device.
When Yoco can end the agreement
We may terminate our agreement immediately and without notice if:
Any law or regulation requires us to do so.
You breach any of the terms of our agreement.
We reasonably suspect fraudulent or criminal activity.
We suspect unlawful or negligent use of our services.
We suspect activity that could harm the card payment system.
You fail to notify us of something you're required to.
Using Yoco in South Africa and internationally
Your Yoco card machine can only be used within South Africa. You can however accept online payments from customers abroad, as long as those transactions are processed from within South Africa, in South African Rand.
