How Yoco Gateway works

When a customer pays on your website, Yoco Gateway securely handles the payment in the background using an API to connect your website to Yoco. Card details are sent safely via this API to the customer’s bank, which approves or declines the payment depending on the available funds. And it all happens within seconds.

If you’re using WooCommerce, Wix, Shopstar, or a custom hosting platform, we provide API keys so that you can install the relevant payments plugin, and link it to your Yoco profile.

If you’re using Shopify as your hosting platform, they take care of the API keys in the background so that your website is automatically linked to your Yoco profile when you install the payments plugin.

👩‍💻 APIs and API keys

  • API: a way for different systems to ‘speak’ to each other. In the world of online payments, it’s how your website platform connects to Yoco so that payments can be completed.

  • API key: a secure code that proves the connection between your website and Yoco is allowed. It helps keep payments safe by making sure that only your website can send payment requests to Yoco.

💡 Good to know: We recommend buying a Yoco card machine so that you have sales in both your physical and online stores covered – and so that Yoco becomes your one-stop-shop for payments, reconciliation, and more. Don’t have a card machine? Click here to choose the right one for your business and we’ll have you up and running and accepting online payments on your website in next to no time!

Yoco Gateway doesn’t currently accept

  • All VISA/MasterCard and debit and credit cards.

  • International and local AMEX cards, swipe cards, chip and PIN and SASSA cards issued by any bank.

  • Virtual cards.

  • Fleet cards

  • RCS cards

  • Diners Club cards

💡 Good to know: If your customer tries to pay with a virtual card (whether it’s from a bank, mobile money wallet, or another provider) and the transaction fails, ask them to switch to another card or payment method.

Currency

Yoco Gateway accepts payments in South African Rands (ZAR) only, so all goods and services must be listed in ZAR on your website.

When customers pay with international cards, the issuing bank will carry out an automatic currency conversion, and the relative amount (based on the daily exchange rate at the time of the purchase) will be deducted from the customer’s bank account.

The exchange rate is determined by the customer’s bank.

Fees

Transaction fees for online payments depend on your Yoco Plan and monthly turnover. Your customer’s bank may charge additional fees beyond our control.
